Mad Dogs today has unveiled The Kaiping Dash, which is a 155km, one day adventure challenge from Macau to Chikanzhen (near Kaiping)...it's delving into the most interesting and beautiful part of Guangdong.
Friday night in Zhuhai (near the Macau border, come over after work) allows for an early start to the challenge on Saturday morning. Soon after leaving the city, the route heads through unspoilt villages which seem to have seen little change for decades or maybe even centuries.
Workers are usually hard at work tending the rice crop and as you near Kaiping, the first diaolou watchtowers appear. The ride ends in Chikanzhen, a small town west of Kaiping which, seemingly unique for a town of this size in China, has only old buildings. Overnight in Chikanzhen, in a local guesthouse housed in a beautiful classical building is included.
Sunday morning is free for exploration of this lovely area. The guesthouse has bicycles for rent - which may be more appropriate than your road bike for exploring the back streets and the clusters of nearby diaolou watchtowers.
On Sunday, early afternoon, for a small extra cost there will be transportation back to the Zhuhai Port for you and your bicycle. From here, you can return to Hong Kong by ferry.
